Abstract Details: Consistency in the execution of each exercise of high-intensity functional training (HIFT) workouts is thought to be important for optimizing performance; often defined by the ability to complete ‘as many repetitions as possible’ (AMRAP) within a set duration. Fatigue is inevitable in this endeavor, and it can influence the ability to maintain a consistent pace and power output. Muti-ingredient pre-workout supplements might help to mitigate fatigue, as many formulations contain ingredients known to enhance blood flow and nutrients to exercising muscle. Currently, there is a gap in literature on the effect of such supplements on HIFT performance. Purpose: Examine the effect of a pre-workout supplement (S) and workout duration on exercise kinetics variability during a HIFT AMRAP protocol.

Methods: Men (n=12: 27.6 ± 8 years, 175 ± 7.4 cm, 89.1 ± 12.1 kg), Women (n=10: 31.3 ± 5.5 years, 167.2 ± 4.7 cm, 70.2 ± 13.2kg) with ≥ 2 years of HIFT experience completed four experimental visits on the same day and time each week over four weeks in randomized, cross-over fashion. On each visit, participants were randomly administered either a S or a non-caloric placebo (P) before resting 40 minutes and then completing either a 5- or 15-minute AMRAP of rowing (men: 9 kcal; women: 7 kcal), six barbell thrusters (men: 43.1 kg; women: 29.5 kg), and three box jumps (men: 0.6 m; women: 0.5 m). The rowing ergometer microcomputer recorded average strokes per minute (SPM) and power (W) on each round. A three-dimensional camera monitored thruster barbell velocity (m*sec^-1) and estimated power from the load on each repetition, and all box jump repetitions launched from in-ground force plates that measured average peak force (N), mean impulse (N*sec), and rate of force development (RFD; N*sec^-1) across all jumps. Variability across rounds was assessed by calculating the standard deviation (SD) and slope of each kinetic measure across each round completed.

Results: Separate analysis of variance with repeated measures ANOVA revealed a condition x time interaction for the SD of mean box jump impulse (p = 0.029), where a trend (p = 0.066) for greater variability during P (20.8 ± 3.2 N*sec) compared to S (17.0 ± 2.3 N*sec) during the 5-minute bouts. Conversely, a main effect for condition with the SD of peak box jump force (p = 0.008) indicated more variability during S (117 ± 11 N) than P (95 ± 9 N). No other differences between the conditions were seen.

Conclusions: The multi-ingredient supplement improved box jump impulse consistency during the 5-minute AMRAP but at the expense of greater variability in peak box jump force expression overall. PRACTICAL APPLICATION: These data provide evidence of a potential benefit from a multi-ingredient pre-workout supplement on consistency in exercise kinetics during HIFT. Though greater variability was seen with peak force, the instantaneous metric is already highly variable whereas impulse more completely describes force expression during the box jump. Consistent force expression might aid balance and stability when landing on the box and could also reflect greater efficiency when stepping down and transitioning to the subsequent repetitions. Athletes might consider using this pre-workout supplement when shorter-duration HIFT workouts contain plyometric-style movements that also require efficient negotiation of an obstacle (e.g., box).
