My research during the last four years has been quite varied; however, I am primarily interested in elucidating the effects of resistance training and L-citrulline supplementation on vascular and skeletal muscle function in various clinical populations. My main objective is to find effective non-pharmacological therapies to prevent or attenuate two major health problems associated with aging: arterial dysfunction and sarcopenia (recently characterized as a loss of muscle mass, strength [dynapenia], and physical performance). Although the most efficacious exercise modality for improvement in muscle mass and strength is high-intensity resistance exercise training, data suggests the impact of this intensity on arterial function has been inconsistent (either detrimental or no vascular effects). Maintenance of cardiovascular and metabolic health is imperative, and evidence suggests improving muscle mass and strength (muscle quality) is a strong factor in this relationship.
